One More Day

One more day until classes.  I’ve been reading my class notes for the first two days of classes.  One might think that I should be taking it easy, but this is all review…so I guess I am taking it easy.

The game plan for the next two years is as follows.  The first year will be spent learning the normal function of the human body.  We will start off in a fundamentals module (i.e. biochem, genetics, cell bio) followed by subsequent modules covering the different physiological systems in groups (i.e. musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary).  Running parallel to these modules, we will have a course in clinical medicine through the year discussing professionalism, communication, exam and diagnosis.  Next year we will be learning what can go wrong with the human body and how to fix it.  The curriculum will be similar with modules covering grouped systems and a concurrent clinical medicine course discussing the application of what we are learning.

At the end of two years we will be taking the USMLE Step 1 boards which, based on what I can gather from people who have just taken the exam, is a lot like getting shot in the face with everything that you learned over the first two years of medical school.  Everyone says that we should go ahead and get the review books and start studying for the USMLE as we cover the material.  Since they are so adamant about this, I get the feeling that no one actually does this.

The book everyone recommends is the First Aid for the USMLE Step 1.  I’ll be picking this up here pretty soon along with an Amazon order for some other books that I’ll be needing.
